Our guides and instructors are professionally trained and nationally certified through Paddle Canada, Sirius Wilderness Medicine and all have additional life skills and talents. They travel extensively and continually add to their experience and expertise. They love to paddle and share that love with others.

HORIZONS programs and expeditions are directed by Rick Wise. Rick has been paddling the North Shore of Lake Huron for over 20 years and Lake Superior for over 10 years. He is a Full Guide certified under the Association of Eastern Canadian Sea Kayak Outfitters (AECSKO) and a Level 4 paddler and Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Trainer for Paddle Canada (formerly the CRCA). He has a University of Waterloo degree in Recreation and Environmental Studies. Rick now leads expeditions for Horizons Adventures and teaches many of the courses. He has been involved with a number of Northern Ontario programs including part-time teaching at Laurentian University and Cambrian College. Rick is a Senior Instructor for Sirius Wilderness Medicine and is a First Aid and CPR instructor for the Canadian Red Cross. Rick owns a house in Whitefish, near Sudbury where he lives with his wife, Cathy and his 13 year old daughter, Sarah and 7 year old, Katie.

Jim is a level 1 CRCA instructor and an Assistant Guide. He works in construction, logging, and sheep farming to name a few and he also builds beautiful kayaks with cedar strip. If you want more information on Jim's kayaks try this link

Richard is one of our tireless volunteers for Horizons. Richard is a CRCA Level 1 instructor and helps with many of our day programs. He has paddled the North Channel many times and knows Lake Superior as well, having assisted on several Horizons sea kayaking trips. Richard is also a principal instructor with the Sudbury Canoe club safety program.

Has been with Horizons for over 3 seasons. He is a Level 2 paddler and a Flatwater Instructor. Norm helps primarily with instruction for beginers.

Karen is a Level 3 Paddle Canada paddler and Level 1 instructor. She is a wonderful cook (when she doesn't burn the food) and capable guide. A local resident of the North Channel area, you can often find her paddling under the moon-lit sky. She loves being outside exploring near and far - whether it be by kayak/canoe, ski, foot, ice-axe or horse. She has hiked & traveled through the mountains and plains of Western Canada, Tanzania, Kenya, Egypt, and Peru, recently returning from a 6 wk solo trek through the eastern & western Nepal mountainside where she successfully summitted Imje Tse a 6,189 m peak in the Himalayas.

Sue is a level 3 Paddle Canada certified paddler who has developed her love of kayaking on many Horizons trips.  She helped lead our Newfoundland trip in 06, and is a genuine Newfoundlander.   In her spare time she is a orthopedic surgeon in Sudbury.

 

Mark Gibault

Mark is a Level 3 skills paddler and a Level 1  instructor.  He is  currently working on his Level 2 instructor certification.  He is also an ORCKA canoe instructor and he and Heather run " By Path or Paddle Expeditions"    Mark lives on Manitoulin Island and works in Wikwemikong as a Elimentary School Principle.

 

Heather

Heather is an ORCKA Level 2 Instructor and a Coastal Sea Kayakin.  She teaches on Manitoulin and has guided numberous trips and tours with Mark for " By Path or Paddle" and for Horizons Adventures.  She and Mark were team members on the Yukon River race, placing first in their category in 2011.
