Our guides and instructors are professionally trained and nationally certified through Paddle Canada, Sirius Wilderness Medicine and all have additional life skills and talents. They travel extensively and continually add to their experience and expertise.They love to paddle and share that love with others.

  • Rick Wise

    Rick Wise

    HORIZONS programs and expeditions are directed by Rick Wise. Rick has been paddling the North Shore of Lake Huron for over 20 years and Lake Superior for over 10 years. He is a Level 4 paddler and Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Trainer for Paddle Canada . He has a University of Waterloo degree in Recreation and Environmental Studies. Rick now leads expeditions for Horizons Adventures and teaches many of the courses. He has been involved with a number of Northern Ontario programs including instruction at Laurentian University and Cambrian College. Rick is a Senior Instructor for Sirius Wilderness Medicine and is a First Aid and CPR instructor for the Canadian Red Cross.
  • Sarah Wise

    Sarah Wise

    Sarah has been training as a guide and instructor with her Horizons for the past several years intermittently as she follows her own career path in Health Promotion. Last year she attained both her Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Instructor and her Paddle Canada Basic SUP instructor certification and in 2016 earned her Paddle Canada L2 skills and L1 instructor certification. She is studying at Laurentian University and spent time in Ireland just past fall on a University exchange. She looks forward to a career in health. She is growing to love paddle sports more each year and is looking forward to getting out on the water again this year guiding trips, instructing at the Sudbury Canoe club and around the North. We are very proud of Sarah and Rick looks forward to working with her once again this year.
  • Jamie Duncanson

    Jamie Duncanson

    Is a student at Laurentian University in her 4th year of the Adventure Leadership program. She has interned with us in 2016, earned her Paddle Canada Level 1 and Basic Instructor this year. She is a tree planter in the spring and works hard at everything she does. Jamie will be working at video editing for Horizons over the winter as well.
  • Jim Olding

    Jim Olding

    Jim is a level 1 Paddle Canada instructor and an Assistant Guide. His eclectic background ranges from handmade cedar kayaks to sheep farming. Jim has paddled in New Zealand, Florida Everglades and all around the Great Lakes.
  • Richard Burton

    Richard Burton

    Richard is one of our tireless volunteers for Horizons. Richard is a Paddle Canada Level 1 instructor and helps with many of our day programs. He has paddled the North Channel many times and knows Lake Superior as well, having assisted on several Horizons sea kayaking trips. Richard is also a principal instructor with the Sudbury Canoe club safety program.
  • Mark Gibeault

    Mark Gibeault

    Mark is a Level 3 skills paddler and a Level 1 instructor. He is currently working on his Level 2 instructor certification. He is also an ORCKA canoe instructor and he and his partner, Heather run " By Path or Paddle Expeditions". Mark lives on Manitoulin Island and works in Wikwemikong as an Elementary School Principal.

    Heather Gibeault

    Heather is an ORCKA Level 2 Instructor and a Coastal Sea Kayaking Instructor. She teaches on Manitoulin and has guided numerous trips and tours with Mark for " By Path or Paddle" and for Horizons Adventures. She and Mark were team members on the Yukon River race, placing first in their category in 2011.
  • Marlies and Dieter Schoenefeld

    Marlies and Dieter Schoenefeld

    This couple has been with Horizons for all of our 20 year history. Marlies is our treasured artist and Dieter is her treasured confidant, spouse, logistical support and all around Horizons handy assistant. Both have been traveling Canada's wilderness and have made many trips abroad as well. Dieter is a retired engineer and active naturalist and Marlies is an accomplished and celebrated local artist and birder. You can see Marlies's work hanging around Sudbury, at the visitors' center in Killarney Provincial Park and in my living room. They add joy and spice to any kayak or canoe excursion and both are excellent story tellers.
